Legal Practice Council — the SaaS platform that certifies a profession

We designed and built the secure web platform South Africa's legal regulator uses to issue and renew practitioner good standing certificates — replacing a manual process with self-service for the country's attorneys and advocates.

Challenge

The Legal Practice Council regulates every attorney and advocate in South Africa — and a good standing certificate is the document that lets them practise. Yet issuing and renewing those certificates ran on a manual, paper-and-email process: slow for the Council's admin teams, frustrating for practitioners who needed certificates on demand, and difficult to track or audit at the scale of a national profession. The Council needed to move the entire process online, securely, without dropping a single practitioner record.

Approach

We treated this as regulatory infrastructure, not just a web app. We designed a multi-tenant SaaS architecture built for security and auditability from the ground up — the standard a statutory body issuing legal credentials demands. An embedded squad handled the full build: practitioner-facing application and renewal flows, automated document generation, real-time status tracking, and admin dashboards giving the Council oversight of the whole certificate lifecycle. Then we stayed on to maintain and support it.

Solution

We delivered a secure, end-to-end SaaS platform where legal practitioners apply for and renew their good standing certificates entirely online. It includes user and practitioner management, automated certificate generation, application status tracking, and admin dashboards for the Council's teams to manage applications, oversee the process, and report at scale — all under one maintained, supported system.

Outcome

The Council moved a profession-wide certification process from manual to self-service, giving practitioners certificates on demand and giving the Council a single auditable system of record. Melsoft remains the Council's development and support partner for the platform — maintaining, securing, and iterating it as a live piece of national regulatory infrastructure.

Melsoft built us a system our practitioners rely on and our teams trust. They understood that this wasn't just software — it's how the profession proves it's in good standing. It's been stable, secure, and properly supported since day one.
