Google’s Gemini Agent and the Rise of Generative AI for Business

Google’s Gemini agent turns enterprise AI into a persistent digital coworker with its own identity, permissions, storage and ability to complete real work.

Google’s Gemini agent is designed to do more than answer questions

Google is positioning its new Gemini agent as a workplace system that can take responsibility for tasks, rather than simply respond to prompts. Announced at Google Cloud’s Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8, the agent can handle knowledge work, content creation, meetings, data analysis and coding from one interface. (cloud.google.com)

That shift matters because enterprise AI is moving from a productivity add-on to an operational layer. The important question is no longer whether employees can use an AI assistant. It is whether a company is prepared to give an AI system a defined role, access to business data and permission to act.

From chatbot to persistent coworker

Google says Gemini can work across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar while retaining shared memory, skills and controls. It can also continue running in the cloud after a user closes a laptop, allowing longer tasks to proceed across hours or days. (cloud.google.com)

The most consequential feature is the proposed coworker agent. Rather than creating a temporary assistant for one prompt, a business could define an ongoing role, such as project coordinator, finance analyst or research assistant. Google says these agents can have their own identity, company email address and persistent storage, while accessing only the context provided by users or teams. (cloud.google.com)

In practical terms, a marketing team might assign an agent to monitor campaign performance, prepare a weekly summary, draft presentation updates and route questions to the right employees. The value would not come from one impressive answer, but from the agent maintaining continuity between recurring tasks.

One agent, multiple models and tools

Gemini is also being presented as an orchestration layer. It can plan multi-step work, use connected business systems, create temporary sub-agents and select different underlying models for different jobs. Google says the platform can currently route work across Gemini models and Claude models from Anthropic, with support for other private and open models planned. (cloud.google.com)

This model-routing approach challenges the idea that companies must choose one universal model. An AI coding assistant may need a different model from a meeting summariser or a financial analysis workflow. The agent becomes the persistent interface, while the model underneath can change according to quality, cost or task requirements.

That puts Gemini into direct competition with products such as OpenAI ChatGPT and Claude AI, but the enterprise contest is broader than model performance. The real differentiator may be how well each platform connects to identity systems, company data, workflows and approval processes.

The business risk is governance, not novelty

Giving an AI its own mailbox, storage and permissions makes it more useful, but also creates a new category of security and compliance risk. Companies will need to decide what an agent may read, what it may change, when a human must approve an action and how its decisions are logged.

Google highlights identity and policy management, authorization controls, secure sandboxes, network gateways and spending limits as core parts of the system. Those controls are essential, but implementation details will matter more than product language. A company should test whether permissions are genuinely narrow, whether access can be revoked immediately and whether sensitive actions require human confirmation. (cloud.google.com)

Enterprises should also treat persistent memory carefully. A long-running agent can become more useful as it learns a team’s working context, but accumulated context can become stale, overly broad or difficult to audit.

What it means for businesses

The Gemini agent is an important signal that generative AI for business is entering an operational phase. The best AI tools will not simply generate text or code; they will coordinate work across systems and remain accountable to organisational policies.

Businesses considering adoption should begin with bounded workflows: recurring reports, internal research, meeting follow-ups or low-risk coding tasks. Define the agent’s identity, data access, approval thresholds, retention rules and owner before expanding its responsibilities.

The technology may eventually feel less like using software and more like adding a digital colleague. Melsoft Digital helps businesses implement and adopt AI and automation, including the governance processes needed to make that transition responsibly.
